Which is more important??  I have struggled with this question for a long time and have made a decision!
Poor production quality can disengage your congregation.
An awkward camera angle, poor lighting, unclear, noisy audio can detract from the effectiveness of your content.
Likewise, good sound, video and graphics can help to highlight a point, ram home an important message, and enhance the emotion and feeling of the message. Super important for churches that carry the greatest message of all – The Gospel of Jesus Christ!
However, one thing that I have learnt over 15 years leading Church Tech teams, is that content ALWAYS trumps production quality.
What’s the point of good audio if the message being conveyed is not communicated well?
What’s the point of a great camera angle if the content in and of itself is not engaging, emotive and interesting, or is too “waffley”, or even inappropriate?
I believe media can be MUCH more engaging and effective as a communication tool when produced and executed to a high standard. But it should not come at the expense of quality content.
There are many churches in the Illawarra, representing a diverse range of worship styles, congregation sizes, budgets and resources. Remember, every media item does not need to be “Hillsong standard” (although it is a good bar to aim for).
Be authentic to who your church is and is called to be. Comparison is a killer.
If the emotion, heart and spirit of the message wanting to be communicated is there… then that is what is most important!
So, content wins!
